We source Foundation class mother plants from a local nursery, Lassen Canyon Nursery. These plants have been grown conventionally- but that’s all that is available to us. We plant these mother plants in our organic fields.
We grow our strawberry plants in isolated areas that have only been in use as irrigated pasture for livestock production. These pastures are part of an intensive rotational grazing system, which stimulates perennial grass and clover growth. These lush pastures on sandy soils offer ideal growing conditions for premium strawberry nursery plants.
We grow the plants out all summer long- picking off blossoms to prevent fruit set and also setting the daughter plants in the center of the rows to maximize production.
The nursery soon fills with daughter plants and becomes a sea of strawberry plants. Our strawberry plants accumulate their chilling hours in the field. Once we have enough chilling hours, we’re ready to dig our plants.
Our plants are harvested at the end of October. We ship the harvested material to a trimming shed in Redding. The plants are then sorted, with the mother plants and weeds separated from the daughter plants. The plants are then trimmed and boxed.
